Day 4 - Things Should Not Be Taken For Granted!

Our first OIE (Overseas Immersion Experience) lesson in WUST! This time round, we were taught by a local teacher from WUST and she gave us a better in depth understanding of China from how it was like in the past till present, how investing in China now could mean having huge potential because of China is advancing as time goes by!
Let's get ATTENTIVE!
To be truthful, her way of teaching is not quite able to catch our attention. Especially when she talks more about China’s economy and the development of China, this may not appeal or sound interesting to many. However, I know that this is inevitable, as what she is teaching is definitely useful for us as we can learn and understand more about China. For me, I was really interested in China’s economy and the investment part because I have always been into business related knowledge.

However, not sure that I'm lucky or unlucky, when my row of people just started chatting because of a sweet passing around, the teacher actually called us to stop talking and even ask if we were wanting to say anything! Although not feeling very embarrassed, but it indeed made us felt like we were something illegal or against the law!

After the class, most of us actually went back to our hostel to have a rest after a few days of pushing ourselves.. As much as I would really love to take a break as well, some of us were asked by the WUST student leaders to have some badminton game! Being appreciative, we could never reject them, so we went over to have some fun with them as well as taking the chance to interact and communicate with them.

Friendly game with them! =)
The HUGE entire area for badminton courts!
Rows of table-tennis tables!
Thanks to this mini bonding session, I felt much closer to the WUST student leaders, adding on to that, I was even introduced to somemore student leaders that were not in-charged of hosting our batch! It's always nice to get to know new friends! =D

Reflections:

As i reflect on what happened in the OIE class, it made me start to observe how the students in china behave in class. As I walked through the classrooms, I realised that literally NONE of them were chatting and they were VERY attentive in class! This is something that you can hardly get to see in Singapore!
Probably because of the many opportunities we Singaporeans can get to study when we were young, this gave many of us the feeling that education for us is something that is totally free of charge or something that is ought to happen for all of us.
However! we can and should never assume that such wonderful education system applies to other countries as well! In China, students have to face many obstacles just to be able to grab a book and start studying. I guess this is what makes all of them become hardworking and diligent when it comes to studying. Watching them being so attentive in class, has somewhat motivated me in a way that I should not take the opportunitiy to study for granted. Hopefully I am able to keep my mind focused and take in all the knowledge i can that someone else may be trying their best to pursue for it.
Since we are given a perfect chance to have an education since young, we should treasure it! Although some of the subjects we have learnt or are learning may not be applicable in the future, but it is these that makes you become knowledgeable as you discover that there are many things to learn in life! Of course, you may be surprised that things that you think may not be useful now, may be something that you may need to acquire for a better future!

" Education is what remains after one has forgotten everything he learned in school. "

  1. Dear Yu Chuan, Interesting reflections.
The observations you saw and what you learnt regarding Chinese mindsets are important learning values.
These experiences will definitely help to increase your CQ and GQ.
    Best regards, Lim Choon Boo
